Pop speaks during the Spurs trip to the White House in celebration of the 2014 NBA Championship

USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo on Friday announced that Gregg Popovich, who has led the San Antonio Spurs to five NBA championships, will succeed Mike Krzyzewski as coach of the U.S. basketball team after the 2016 Olympics.

Popovich takes the reins beginning with the team’s 2017 training camp, and will coach the team at the 2019 World Cup and 2020 Olympics.

“In all of our lives, if you can keep challenges in front of you, I think it’s a good thing. I’m not ready to plant tomatoes day in and day out… If you look ahead to challenges you’re going to have, you stay young, you stay excited, you stay vibrant. So this is very exciting for me and I think it makes me sharper for the Spurs.”
